Piknic Q&A /w VILIFY & CONSTRUCT

PIKNIC BLOG LINK Vilify and Construct are two huge pillars of the local drum n bass scene and it's not a far stretch to even say the Canadian bass music scene in general. These two are committed, dedicated, devoted and maybe even fanatical about it and truth be told, we need a lot more people like that. They've also been running the weekly Bass Drive Wednesdays at Koi bar, which you should definitely check out. They will be holding it down at Jardin des Floralies from 16:00 to 18:00 this Sunday, July 18th. Read on to get familiar with these folks. State your name: Jenny 'VILIFY' Carmichael How did you get into this? I grew up in Toronto which had an amazing drum'n'bass scene. From the age of 13 I was blessed with the opportunity to get to see incredible headliners every week and just remember thinking, “I want to be up there doing this.” Bought my turntables at the age of 18 and the rest is history… What’s your ideal setup to rock a crowd? For me it doesn't matter about the club itself or the amount of people. What matters most is that the people there are dancing and having a great time. If the people there are having fun, so am I. (Good sound is key though!) What do you usually bring to a picnic? Grapes and sunglasses. What’s the first song that made you go crazy? Rage Against the Machine - Killing In The Name Of What song will you never drop? Never say never ;) If you take a song I don't like and mix it in to something in a way that's creative and sounds good, it's hard to hate. Funniest request you’ve ever gotten? Every time someone requests 'Call on Me' it gets more funny. Most memorable DJ experience? Oh man, many come to mind…My first gig ever was playing in this huge church in the upper pews with a huge stained glass window behind me, with the dancefloor down below... Rocking out with Datsik, Excision and Construct was incredible and just about every single Wednesday @ Bass Drive with my boy Construct and the amazing crew there dancing, they're all memories that mean so much to me. Biggest fail of your career? No clue.. Focusing on the positives! I say Piknic, you say...Lucky Montreal! -------------------------- State your name: Construct aka Tulippe aka Marc. How did you get into this? A friend of mine asked me to make a flyer for his new drum'n'bass crew (BreakBeat Elite) years ago in Halifax. I joined in the crew, started promoting and organizing shortly after. We booked Vilify (formerly 420Jenny) to play one of our first shows and that was it. We became a family, all hooked on dark heavy bass. What’s your ideal setup to rock a crowd? A fully functional pro dj mixer, two Tech12s, my serato/laptop and my trigger finger. Beers and cheerleaders on stage, that's just the cherry on top. What do you usually bring to a picnic? The three Bs of summer: Beer, Bagette and Brie. Once I have that, I can add some other treats for fun, but my bases are covered. What’s the first song that made you go crazy? Growing up, I would have to say "Firestarter" by The Prodigy or "Da Funk" by Daft Punk. A very close contender would be "Attack of the analogue worms" by Mr. Oizo - the whole album. What song will you never drop? "Satisfaction" by Benni Benassi Funniest request you’ve ever gotten? I wasn't the one who received this request, but it is by far the best. My friend Rekkid Bitch Mike was spinning a drum'n'bass set for one of our afterhour shows, someone walked up to him and asked him to play "Mortal Kombat." Most memorable DJ experience? Playing alongside Vilify after Datsik & Excision back in January of this year. That show was off the hook! Biggest fail of your career? I was setting up an after-hours party our crew was having in Halifax around 3am. When i took my needles out of my carrying case I smashed a stylust, and i mean SMASHED. FAIL. Thankfully it wasn't long until we found a replacement needle. I say Piknic, you say... BASS.
