Kick Ass Link of the Week: Thru-you

It’s friday and I’ve decided that fridays are going to be KICK ASS LINK OF THE WEEK (KALOTW) day.  Our first entry:

thruyou

Absolutely unbelievable.  Kutiman is an Iraeli musician, composer, producer and animator.  He has done several musical projects, but earlier this year (2009) he released Thru-YOU - an online music video project mixed from samples of youtube videos.  THAT’S RIGHT – this guy took a ton of completely unrelated videos of amateur musicians and mixed them into 7 fantastic songs.

Kutiman marketed the project virally, telling only 20 of his friends.  The site received over 1 million hits in less than a week.  And for good reason.  From Wikipedia:

After viewing ThruYOU, open source advocate Lawrence Lessig praised the project as a pioneer of a new, less regulated form of media, saying “If you come to the Net armed with the idea that the old system of copyright is going to work just fine here, this more than anything is going to get you to recognize: you need some new ideas.”

I’m a big fan of the open source paradigm so here’s hoping that other people follow in Kutiman’s footsteps.

Tune in next friday for the KALOTW!
